In 2001, Borders outsourced its online bookstore to Amazon.

Read that again. During the most critical window of the e-commerce era, Borders handed its digital customers directly to its primary competitor. By the time they built their own platform in 2008, it was irretrievably late. Bankruptcy came in 2011.

The mistake wasn't technological. They forfeited something that can never be recovered: the direct relationship between an institution and the people it exists to serve.

Organizations are making the Borders mistake with AI today — outsourcing their entire AI capability, their data, and their customer intelligence to platforms and vendors, keeping nothing proprietary. Renting their future from someone else.

The lesson from my book: the digital space isn't a supplement to your mission. It's a primary arena where your customers are constructing meaning and making choices. Absent from it, you're not maintaining integrity — you're becoming invisible.

Who owns the relationship with your next generation of customers?
