They fired people for AI. Now they're hiring them back.
Call it the AI boomerang. Ford rehired 350+ veteran engineers after automated quality systems missed what their experience caught. 55% of employers now say they regret AI-driven layoffs. Gartner projects half of companies that cut service teams for AI will rehire by 2027.
None of these organizations lacked AI capability. They lacked a question.
AI-centered leadership asks: who can this replace? AI-powered leadership asks: what does this free my people to do?
In my book I argue that AI's first job is not to do the mission. It's to make room for the mission — clearing the friction and busywork so your people finally have margin for the work that was never automatable: expertise, empathy, judgment, noticing what the dashboard can't.
Companies that cut the humans cut the very capacity AI was supposed to amplify.
Which question is your organization asking?
